Make Thee An Ark
Gen 6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. 9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. 10 And Noah begot three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
The Word “grace” in verse 8 means in the Hebrew: loving kindness. So, according to the Scriptures God poured out His loving kindness on Noah and Noah’s family. In verse 9 we see that Noah was “just,” the word just means to be righteous, clean, lawful or you could say justified,” before God. The Word also says Noah was perfect. The word perfect means: entire, integrity, truth, without blemish, complete, without spot, undefiled, upright.
The Bible also tells us that Noah walked with God. That means Noah knew God and talked with Him and did the best he could to follow God’s ways. The word “walked,” means: behave (self), exercise (self), come, (on) continually, etc. There are more words to this word translated “walked.” The Word also tells us that Noah was a preacher of righteousness. 2Pe 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
So we see that Noah knew God long before the flood and had grown to know Him and His voice. Thank God for Noah, because if he had not been a righteous man in his generation there would have been nothing and no one saved. And we would not be here to tell the story!
The Word says that the earth was corrupt. The word corrupt means: to decay, ruin, destroy, (-er, -uction), etc. So the earth was destroyed by the people that lived in Noah’s day. Why? Because the Word says it was, “filled with violence.” Does this sound like the days we are living in? It does to me, with all the wars and famine, pestilence and natural disasters. So needless to say, there is a lot of violence in the earth these days, just like in the days of Noah.
Gill - Not only before men, but in the sight of God; and not by his own works of righteousness, for no man is just by them before God, but by the righteousness of the promised seed, the Messiah; for he "became heir of the righteousness which is by faith", Heb_11:7 the righteousness which was to be brought in by the Son of God, and which was revealed to him from faith to faith; and which by faith he received and lived upon, as every just man does, and believed in as his justifying righteousness before God; though he also lived a holy and righteous conversation before men. Not that he was perfectly holy, or free from sin, but was a partaker of the true grace of God; was sincere and upright in heart and life; lived an unblemished life and conversation, untainted with the gross corruptions of that age he lived in, which he escaped through the knowledge, grace, and fear of God; and therefore it is added, that he was holy, upright, and blameless "in his generations": among the men of the several generations he lived in. In the several stages of his life, in youth and in old age; he was throughout the whole course of his life a holy good man. He walked according to his will, in the ways of truth and righteousness; walked in a manner well pleasing to him, and enjoyed much communion with him, as Enoch had done before him, Gen_5:22;[Mt. 8:1-17; 22-27]
Now when God spoke to Noah, He told Noah to make an ark. He gave Noah specific instructions on how to build the Ark . How wide, how tall and how long. God told him what all to build into the Ark and how many levels. Then God said pitch it with in and without with pitch. Well that word "pitch", just stuck in my spirit and so I started my search through the Word and other materials to see what the picture was that God was showing to His people about the Ark. The Old Testament is a symbolic shadow of what will be going on in the New Testament. Here is what I found as I searched these words and details.
Gen 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. 16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
