Looking In The Wrong Place

Finding what we want involves looking in the right place.

It was a Friday night, and a scavenger hunt for our youth group was on tap. My wife engineered a long list of items so the groups could compete with each other to see who could complete the most tasks in the allotted time.

One adventure involved requesting a cheeseburger from a local fast food restaurant that served only chicken. Since the antics were filmed, we had the pleasure of observing the look on the young girl’s face when the order was placed. She probably wondered why a sensible looking teenager would ask for something they knew wasn’t produced at this restaurant.

It’s just as impossible to get a cheeseburger from a chicken shack as it is a musical CD from an auto parts store. And it’s similarly impossible to receive spiritual guidance from a piece of wood or stone, but God’s people tried. So God reminded them: Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’ Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’ Can it give guidance? (Habakkuk 2:19 NIV)

Spiritual guides, palm readers, Ouija boards, self help books, secular psychologists and psychiatrists, horoscopes, and Facebook friends are all pieces of wood some consult for advice. Unfortunately these are the wrong places. While a few of the above might on occasion give sound counsel, the essential advice giver is God’s Word.

Unlike stone or wooden idols, God’s Word is living and powerful, possessing the ability to peek into our innermost spiritual depths and show us what we need to see. Then the Spirit of God will enable us to carry out the required actions. Faith solidifies the mix and leads to success.

God’s Word is always the right place to look for advice and direction. God will never steer us wrong because he has our best interests at heart.

Prayer: Merciful Lord, when we’re tempted to look for the right answer in the wrong place, reminds us Your answers are always designed for our good. www.lovelinesfromgod.com
