Living On The Rock

It appeared their feet were glued to the precipices they stood on. No stumbling. No slipping.

Colorado had shown us an abundance of elk, but we hoped for a glimpse of big horn sheep, and what better place than Rocky Mountain National Park. As we made our way over winding roads, they suddenly appeared, perched on rocks that seemed unperchable, grazing on grass that appeared unreachable.

As we and others stopped for photos, I was amazed by their ability to walk on loose rock and narrow ledges. On our return trip, we noticed them again, farther up the mountain on an even more precipitous incline. Their hooves clung to the rock as they filled their bellies.

It would be nice had God constructed me in such a way that I didn’t have to fear falling. I fell often when younger, but my bones survived. Now I’m older and more careful because my bones have aged.

Fortunately, stability is possible in more than just the physical realm. The psalmist said; He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand (Psalm 40:2 NIV).

When I’m spiritually stable, my feet are on the Rock-not of a mountain but in a relationship with Christ. Jesus identified this rock in the story of the wise and foolish builders. One built his house on rock foundation while the other chose sand. A storm revealed who was wise.

Life on the rock is not controlled by circumstances. Events that could destroy emotionally don’t because our focus is on who controls events rather than the events themselves or our understanding of them. Big horn sheep are not concerned with the ground below. They’re confident they can stand securely.

Only God can transform attitudes of fear and insecurity into sound minds that trust him in every situation. Experience helps but simple faith that says, “Everything’s okay. My life’s in the Father’s hands” will carry you safely over the rocks of life.

Prayer: When it appears life is crumbling beneath us, God help us remember You have set our feet on a firm place. www.lovelinesfromgod.com
